In most eukaryotic cells, organelles and other cargoes move through the cytoplasm along microtubules, using specifi c adaptor molecules to recruit microtubule-based motor proteins such as cytoplasmic dynein or plus end– directed kinesins. Following up on a genetic screen for genes involved in the transport of various organelles through the multinucleate cells of the fi lamen-tous fungus A. nidulans, Salogiannis et al. studied the function of PxdA, a protein specifi cally required for the bidirectional movement of peroxisomes. In the absence of PxdA, peroxisomes clustered at hyphal tips instead of dispersing throughout the cell, whereas the motility and distribution of other organelles, including early endosomes, was unaffected. Surprisingly, however, PxdA mainly localized to early endosomes. Salogiannis et al. found that the protein links these highly motile organelles to peroxisomes, potentially allowing per-oxisomes to move through the cell without recruiting their own set of motor proteins. PxdA's central coiled-coil domain was necessary and suffi cient for the protein's localization and organelle linker function. Senior author Sam Reck-Peterson now wants to investigate how PxdA interacts with both early endosomes and peroxisomes. In a recent JCB paper, < a d d a r t t y p e = " r e l " d o i = " 1 0. 1 0 8 3 / j c b. 2 0 1 5 0 5 0 8 6 " > Guimaraes et al.< / a d d a r t > revealed that not only peroxisomes, but also lipid droplets and ER membranes, hitch-hike on early endosomes in the pathogenic fungus U. maydis. Reck-Peterson says it will be important to determine if PxdA links these other organelles to early endosomes, and whether this phenomenon occurs in animal cells as well. Changing growth conditions prompt large-scale rearrangements of budding yeast chromosomes, < a d d a r t t y p e = " r e l " d o i = " 1 0. 1 0 8 3 / j c b. 2 0 1 …

Peroxisomes move by hitchhiking on early endosomes using the novel linker protein PxdA

Eukaryotic cells use microtubule-based intracellular transport for the delivery of many subcellular cargos, including organelles. The canonical view of organelle transport is that organelles directly recruit molecular motors via cargo-specific adaptors. In contrast with this view, we show here that peroxisomes move by hitchhiking on early endosomes, an organelle that directly recruits the trans...

How proteins penetrate peroxisomes

Three decades after the unobtrusive debut of the peroxisome as a distinct subcellular organelle, biologists are paying attention to the special bag of tricks eukaryotic cells use to entice peroxisomal proteins from their site of synthesis in the cytosol to the peroxisome. In this minireview, we highlight some of the recent findings that have emerged, emphasize their significance, and contrast t...

Religion, fertility and genes: a dual inheritance model.

Religious people nowadays have more children on average than their secular counterparts. This paper uses a simple model to explore the evolutionary implications of this difference. It assumes that fertility is determined entirely by culture, whereas subjective predisposition towards religion is influenced by genetic endowment. People who carry a certain 'religiosity' gene are more likely than a...
